Tulasi (തുളസി)

Tulasi is a thickly grown plant which is commonly seen in ancient Kerala homes. There are different types of Tulasi. Tulasi having the green coloured leaves are called as Rama Tulasi and the one which is having purple coloured leaves and stem is called as Krishna Tulasi.

Tulasi is rich in its medicinal properties. It is most widely used in ayurvedic medicines for many years. The oil extracted from tulasi is used in making herbal tea which is served as a great stress relief. Its aromatic scent brings more relaxation to the mind and soul. Tulasi leaves are used for preparing “Chukku Kapi” for the treatment of fever in most of the Kerala village homes during ancient times.

Tulasi is most commonly used in Hindu worships. According to Hindu beliefs, tulasi represents purity. In ancient Hindu homes , we can see a “tulasi thara ” in frontyard of the home which is believed that it brings some good positive vibes to the home. This tulasi plant is watered daily, lights up diya during evening and worship them. The position of placing the “Tulasi thara” is done according to the “Vastu Shastra”. The wrong direction of planting can bring negative results too.
